Visa Cancellation in Dubai

UAE residence Visa

An active residence normally has to be cancelled when the sponsor or residence status is being changed. For Dubai-issued residence visas, cancellation is handled through the General Directorate of Identity and Foreigners Affairs Dubai (GDRFA Dubai).

What Is Visa Cancellation in Dubai?

A UAE residence visa is issued for a fixed period and remains connected to the person or organisation sponsoring that residence. The sponsor may be an employer, spouse, parent, mainland company, free zone company, investor business or another approved residence category.

As long as you continue under the same sponsorship and remain eligible, the residence visa can be renewed before it expires. When that arrangement ends, the existing residence normally needs to be formally cancelled before you move to another UAE residence status or permanently leave the country.

Visa cancellation in Dubai therefore means formally closing the active Dubai residence file through the relevant immigration procedure.

Why Is UAE Visa Cancellation Required?

A UAE residence visa cannot simply be ignored when the sponsorship under which it was issued has ended. The active residence record needs to match the person’s current employer, family sponsor, business activity or immigration status.

For example, if you resign from one company in Dubai and join another employer, the old employment and residence records need to be closed before the new company completes your new work permit and residence process. This is why visa cancellation when changing jobs in Dubai is an important part of transferring from one employer to another.

The same principle applies if you move from an employment visa to a spouse visa, family visa, investor visa or another UAE residence category. Your previous residence must be dealt with correctly before the new residence status is completed.

If you are permanently moving to another country with your family, your UAE residence records should also be closed correctly. A sponsor who has a wife, husband, children or parents under their sponsorship must cancel or place the dependent residence visas on hold before cancelling their own visa, unless an approved family visa hold is already in place.

How Visa Cancellation Works in Dubai

Visa cancellation in Dubai is processed through GDRFA Dubai for residence visas issued in the emirate. The standard GDRFA residence cancellation service currently lists AED 100 for cancellation, plus AED 10 Knowledge Dirham and AED 10 Innovation Dirham, and an expected processing time of 48 hours. For Dubai mainland employment visas, the employer must normally cancel the MOHRE work permit and employment contract before the residence visa is cancelled. GDRFA currently states a 60-day grace period after cancellation for the standard residence-permit service, while some residence categories have different grace periods. GloboPrime handles employment visa cancellation, family visa cancellation, investor and partner visa cancellation, and Dubai free-zone visa cancellation from the required employment or company process through GDRFA.

What Is the Visa Cancellation Process in Dubai Through GDRFA Dubai?

For a residence permit issued in Dubai, the final immigration cancellation is handled through the General Directorate of Residency and Foreigners Affairs Dubai, GDRFA. The procedure before GDRFA depends on who sponsored the residence visa.

1. Check Who Sponsored the UAE Residence Visa

The first step in the Dubai visa cancellation process is to identify whether the residence was issued under a mainland employer, free zone company, spouse, parent, investor company or another sponsor. This decides whether the cancellation begins with MOHRE, a Dubai free zone authority or directly through the family or immigration file.

2. Cancel or Hold Sponsored Family Visas

If you sponsor a wife, husband, children, parents or other dependents, their residence files need to be dealt with before your own residence visa is cancelled. Depending on the situation, this means completing the family visa cancellation in Dubai or arranging an eligible family visa hold while changing employer.

3. Complete MOHRE Work Permit Cancellation for Mainland Employment

For a mainland private-sector employee, employment visa cancellation in Dubai starts with the employment record. The employer completes the applicable MOHRE work permit and employment contract cancellation. GDRFA requires the MOHRE work permit cancellation extract before the Dubai residence permit of a private-sector employee is cancelled.

4. Submit the Residence Visa Cancellation to GDRFA Dubai

Once the employment, family or company-side requirements have been completed, the GDRFA visa cancellation application is submitted against the Dubai residence file. Applications can be completed through GDRFA digital services or through an authorised Amer Service Centre in Dubai.

5. Pay the Dubai Residence Visa Cancellation Fee

The current GDRFA fee for residence visa cancellation in Dubai is AED 100, with AED 10 Knowledge Dirham and AED 10 Innovation Dirham added to the immigration transaction. Employment, free zone and special company cases can have separate charges from the authority handling the employment or company record.

6. Receive the Visa Cancellation Confirmation

GDRFA currently lists an expected processing time of approximately 48 hours for residence permit cancellation. Once approved, keep the cancellation confirmation and check the final date you are allowed to remain in the UAE. You can then leave the country or complete your new residence and status change within the permitted period.

Where Can I Cancel My Visa in Dubai?

You do not have to visit one specific immigration office to cancel a Dubai residence visa. GDRFA residence cancellation applications can be submitted online through GDRFA Smart Services or through an authorised Amer Service Centre in Dubai.

Amer Centres are located across Dubai and handle GDRFA residence and visa transactions, including eligible residence visa cancellation applications. You can normally use an authorised Amer Centre that is convenient for you rather than travelling to a particular branch.

Area Amer Centre Location
Al Qusais Amer Centre Dubai Main Branch, Amman Street, Al Qusais Industrial 3
Deira Amer 247, Al Khabaisi, behind Abu Baker Al Siddique Metro Station
Al Twar Amer services are available in the Al Twar area near Al Quds Street
Bur Dubai Amer services are available around Al Raffa and Al Mankhool
Al Barsha Amer Centre services are available at Al Barsha Mall
Dubai Marina Amer Lounge services are available in the Dubai Marina area

Amer 247 in Deira also operates 24 hours, which can be useful when the application needs to be prepared outside normal office hours. Before visiting any centre, it is sensible to confirm that the branch is handling the specific residence cancellation transaction you need.

If you prefer not to visit an Amer Centre, eligible Dubai residence visa cancellation applications can also be completed online through GDRFA Smart Services. Employment, free zone and company-sponsored visas can still require MOHRE or free zone cancellation to be completed before the GDRFA residence cancellation is submitted.

What Documents Are Required for Family Visa Cancellation in Dubai?

For a standard family residence visa cancellation in Dubai, GDRFA requires the passport of the sponsor and the passport of the sponsored person. This applies when cancelling a spouse, wife, husband, child or other dependent residence under a Dubai family sponsorship file.

  • Sponsor’s passport – the passport of the person sponsoring the family residence.
  • Sponsored person’s passport – the passport of the wife, husband, child, parent or dependent whose residence is being cancelled.
  • Residence file details – the active Dubai residence information linked to the sponsored person.
  • Cancellation application – submitted through the applicable GDRFA digital service or Amer Centre.

Additional documents can be requested when the file involves a special situation, such as divorce, death of the sponsor, a lost passport, a person outside the UAE or another immigration issue.

If the sponsor is cancelling their own employment visa because they are changing company, the family visas should be cancelled first or placed on an eligible dependent visa hold before the sponsor’s residence cancellation is completed.

Is Free Zone Visa Cancellation Different From Mainland Visa Cancellation?

Yes. The final result is cancellation of the employee’s UAE residence, but the employment-side procedure is different. A mainland private-sector employee normally starts with MOHRE work permit cancellation. A free zone employee normally starts with the authority responsible for the company in that free zone.

Mainland Company Visa Cancellation

For a mainland company employee in Dubai, the employer completes the applicable MOHRE employment contract and work permit cancellation. Once the MOHRE cancellation record has been issued, the employee’s Dubai residence permit is cancelled through GDRFA. This is the normal route for company visa cancellation, employment visa cancellation and work visa cancellation in Dubai mainland.

Free Zone Employee Visa Cancellation

For a free zone visa cancellation in Dubai, the company normally applies through the free zone authority or its authorised portal. The free zone deals with its employment and company records before the immigration cancellation is completed. MOHRE is therefore not the first cancellation authority for most Dubai free zone employees.

DMCC Visa Cancellation

For a DMCC visa cancellation, the DMCC-licensed company applies through the DMCC Member Portal under Employment Services. The company uploads the employee’s passport, visa details, resignation or termination document and applicable end-of-service information. DMCC then reviews the file, submits it to immigration and issues the electronic cancellation documents once approved.

JAFZA Visa Cancellation

For a JAFZA visa cancellation, the company applies through Dubai Trade under the relevant employee residence permit cancellation service. JAFZA requires sponsored dependents to be cancelled or placed on hold with immigration before the employee’s own residence permit is cancelled.

Other Dubai Free Zones

The same distinction applies to employees sponsored through DAFZA, DIFC, IFZA, Meydan Free Zone, Dubai South, Dubai World Trade Centre Free Zone, Dubai Internet City, Dubai Media City and other Dubai free zones. The application starts with the authority connected to the company’s employment file, and the exact documents, fees and processing steps depend on that free zone.
